Pilot G2 Deluxe Pen

Pilot G2 Deluxe Pen with Case

I have always been a fan of Pilot’s G2 gel pens, especially the fine 0.5mm version. A “limited edition” metallic-barrel design has been available for some time now, but I’ve never had the urge to give those a try.

I’ve always been a fan of polished metallic pens, but have never found an affordable one that writes as well as my favorite plastic bodied G2 gel pens do. Parker’s metal-bodied Jotter is nice, but I wasn’t a fan of their gel ink refills. Fisher’s Space Pen also comes close, but the ball point isn’t smooth enough for me.

This is why I am thrilled to have found Pilot’s G2 Deluxe pen. It’s a metal-bodied capped pen that accepts standard G2 gel ink refills. The G2 Deluxe has a narrow but comfortable grip, and feels well balanced. The cap must be aligned perfectly for it to clip on, but that’s not much of a gripe.

The only place I could find this pen was at Stationery Art, a pen/pencil/supply shop located in Hong Kong. International shipping fees were reasonable, but the cases the G2 Deluxe pens come with add unnecessarily to the shipping weight. A week after I received my first order, I promptly ordered 2 more of these pens, just in case.

I really don’t think the G2 Deluxe is new. In fact it’s so hard to find that it might even have been discontinued. I couldn’t find any online store selling these in the US!

The G2 Special Edition is also a great pen, and is a lot easier to find. The reason I went for the Deluxe over the SE is because I have enough retractable pens and was looking for a nice capped one.

I read on an instructable, that you could take a Mont Blanc pen refill and with a slight trimming of the top, it will fit a G2 pen. I have not tried this, but it sounds like a good idea. I have a Mont Blanc Rollerball, that was a gift many years ago. Recently, I thought about buying one for a gift, but the sticker shock pushed me away. I think I’m going to try this, and see how it works out. I’d like to have one when I travel, or use outside of the home. My Mont Blanc never leaves my desk, that way I know it won’t get lost.. LOL

That’s absolutely true. I know that a Mont Blanc pen refill can be made to fit a standard G2 pen body, and I think even the Special Edition retractable.

I didn’t consider trying this with the G2 Deluxe, although I previously had looked into the standard G2 conversion. But when I went to order Mont Blanc refills via Amazon, I found quite a few negative reviews, mainly from those using the refills in a G2 body. If I recall correctly, some complained about the refills drying up or something to that effect when the pen was kept idle for a while. If this is accurate, it could be because the Mont Blanc refills are meant to be used in a capped pen. Hmm, the G2 Deluxe is capped…
