Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass DVD Jacket

I added Kick-Ass to my Netflix queue a long, long time ago, so when it arrived last weekend I didn’t know what to expect. I knew it had something to do with an amateur super hero teen and Nicolas Cage was a Batman-wannabee, but that’s about it.

Kick-Ass is rated R for its profanities, blood, blood, more blood, and a dabble of drugs and an adult situation or two. The movie is funny, in a semi-twisted kind of way, and it has a balanced level of action. It sort of has a Leon the Professional meets Sin City vibe to it.

I definitely recommend Kick-Ass, and although it does have some re-watch potential, it may be better rented than purchased.

Thanks for reminding me that I wanted to see this movie. I remember thinking it looked like a cool movie when I saw the previews, but I had forgotten about it.

It’s also available for instant playback — I just added it to my instant queue.

You’re very welcome! I’m curious to see your reaction to the movie. Now that I think about it, all of the previews I saw were probably rated PG or PG-13 whereas the movie itself is R. I can’t be the only one shocked by how the movie turned out to be! (Not that I am in the least bit disappointed!)

I watched the movie last night, then I went back and watched the trailer. It was a total disconnect.

I’d liken the movie to Napoleon Dynamite becomes a superhero and meets a really dark Batman and Batgirl. I liked the movie, but I think I’d want to have my memory wiped before I wanted to see it again, although maybe it would be fun to watch it with somebody else and see their reactions.

From the first scene with Mindy and Damon in the viaduct, I kept thinking, “holy crap, did I really just see that!” I think the movie did peak a little early though in the first scene where you see Hit-Girl wipe out the drug dealers. That was probably the biggest “did I just see that moment” in the movie for me.

The first scene made no sense to me until later on, but I’m sure that was its purpose.

And I’m with you there about the first scene with Hit-Girl. I may have let out a few profanities in surprise as did my wife.

The first thing I did after watching the movie was to watch a few of the trailers to see if my anticipation was wrongly too gentle. Nope. As you said, it’s like a total disconnect.
